Tomei's character of Sydney's mother was only supposed to appear in the first episode, but Tomei's chemistry with Kanakaredes was so good that the producers decided to have her stick around in Sydney's dreams.

Leslie Silva played Dr. Helen Reynolds during the first season, but was sorely underused. Her character, who ran the clinic where Sydney worked, left in the first episode of the second season.
